Eco-Style Kimono for Everyday Wear
Beanbags that my grandmother made me.
Mini kimono my mother made for dressing up my dolls.
Way back in the day, mothers would say not to throw away any scraps of fabric that could hold at least three red adzuki beans.
When you flip your “kimono switch”, you can see how Japanese culture is slow-paced, feeding off the energy of the sun. Wherever we go, near or far, I want us to all have fun with fashionable kimono.
At ochicochiya, we dedicate ourselves to:
1. Suggest simple and pleasant kimono styles
- Original, domestic cotton kimono line “Kyo Momen Otsu”
- New kimono styles
- Dual-purpose “Towaeru” items / easy kimono-wearing classes
2. Meet new people through kimono and enjoy their company
- Seasonal events, including New Year’s
- Communicate through videos and live broadcasts
3. Reuse, Recycle, Reduce
- Buy & sell kimono and scrap cloth
- Lessons in using scrap cloth, making doll clothes
- Selling of eco-bags
Here at ochicochiya, we want everyone to wear “Towaeru” kimono, which you can wear all the time without thinking too much about it. For example, you can wear boots with your kimono, or even wear a turtleneck sweater instead of a han-eri neckpiece! You can mix and match all kinds of styles just by switching out the sash, and you can be stylish in a very reasonable way by wearing antique kimono.
You may not want all of your grandmother’s old everyday clothing, but even young people today can wear antique kimono, because they never go out of style. Even if they’re stained or spotted, you can easily hide that depending on how you coordinate your outfit.
Our original brand “Otsu” makes it easier for people to start wearing kimono and see how fun it can be, while the “Towaeru” items we developed can be worn as innerwear or outerwear. On top of that, we are helping people to expand the base of kimono culture by showing them how to dress themselves and reuse their favorite kimono fabrics! We also hold events where everyone can attend in kimono, such as for flower-viewing or New Year’s parties, so please feel free to join us.
Take a walk around town, with our help!
Don’t you want to walk around Kyoto in a kimono?

The “Kyoto Kimono Passport” was created by local residents in cooperation with administration, the Chamber of Commerce, and Japanese clothing-related organizations as part of an initiative by Kyoto City to fill the town with kind people wearing kimono.
Those with the Passport can come to our store if their when the way of wearing a kimono is broken in need of rescue. If you want to go shopping in Kyoto or head to the tourist sites while wearing a kimono, please drop by our store.
